Salmon Run Failures in 1997–1998: A Link to Anomalous Ocean Conditions? Salmon Run Failures in 1997–1998: A Link to Anomalous Ocean Conditions?

چکیده
In July 1998 Alaska’s Governor Tony Knowles submitted a request for federal disaster relief owing to severe economic and social hardships in some western Alaska communities affected by unusually poor salmon runs, especially Bristol Bay sockeye salmon Oncorhynchus nerka and Yukon River chinook O. tshawytscha and summer chum O. keta salmon. Other anomalies were also noted in these runs: late run timing, smaller-than-average fish, altered migration pathways, and anecdotal reports of higher occurrences of parasites and increased signs of predation. Were these poor returns attributable to unusual marine environmental conditions in 1997/98? Decadal changes in salmon productivity have been related to indices of the strength of the Aleutian Low in winter, which may affect feeding success during early marine life. Analysis of return-per-spawner data is needed to determine whether this climate-salmon relationship continues to hold. Additionally, significant changes in ocean conditions occurred in the North Pacific and Bering Sea in 1997/98 that may have had profound effects on the marine ecosystem. Not only was there a very strong equatorial El Niño, but light winds, low nutrients, and high solar radiation led to the firstrecorded bloom of coccolithophores in the Bering Sea in summer 1997 and a bloom occurred again in spring 1998. At-sea research is urgently needed on the biotic implications of these conditions, from effects on primary and secondary producers to effects on invertebrates, fish, birds, and marine mammals through the pelagic and benthic

Impact of the 1997/98 ENSO on upper ocean characteristics in Marguerite Bay, western Antarctic Peninsula
[1] A year-round sequence of hydrographic casts is used to trace the evolution of the upper ocean waters in Marguerite Bay, western Antarctic Peninsula (wAP), between 1998 and 2002. Winter 1998 was anomalous, showing an unusually deep mixed layer that became progressively more saline until spring, reaching salinities as high as 34.0. The remnant of this mixed layer (the Winter Water, WW) was th...
متن کاملOceanic processes associated with anomalous events in the Indian Ocean with relevance to 1997–1998
An anomalous climatic event occurred in the Indian Ocean (IO) region during 1997–1998, which coincided with a severe drought in Indonesia and floods in parts of eastern Africa. Cool sea surface temperature anomalies (SSTAs) were present in the eastern IO along and south of the equator. Beginning in July 1997, warm SSTAs appeared in the western IO, and they peaked in February 1998. An ocean gene...
متن کاملA New Model of the Oceanic Evaporation Duct
Failure to consider anomalous propagation of microwave radiation in the troposphere may result in erroneous meteorological radar measurements. The most commonly occurring anomalous propagation phenomenon over the ocean is the evaporation duct. The height of this duct is dependent on atmospheric variables and is a major input to microwave propagation prediction models. This evaporation duct heig...
متن کاملDo Hatchery Salmon Affect the North Pacific Ocean Ecosystem?
Releases of hatchery-reared anadromous salmon into the North Pacific Ocean are currently estimated between 5 and 6 billion juveniles per year. Wild spawning salmon may produce an additional 4 to 5 times this number of juveniles. With as many as 25 billion juvenile Pacific salmon annually entering the ocean and currently producing over 1. 0 million mt of returning adults, salmon survival and pro...
متن کاملWarming Ocean Conditions Relate to Increased Trophic Requirements of Threatened and Endangered Salmon
The trophic habits, size and condition of yearling Chinook salmon (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha) caught early in their marine residence were examined during 19 survey years (1981-1985; 1998-2011). Juvenile salmon consumed distinct highly piscivorous diets in cold and warm ocean regimes with major differences between ocean regimes driven by changes in consumption of juvenile rockfishes, followed by ...
